Makalu Base Camp Trek – 18 days
The fifth highest peak in the world at 8463 meters of Mt. Makalu is located in Middle Eastern Himalaya of Nepal. When you come to do trek on Makalu Base Camp, there aren’t just high peaks you could see. You cross rice fields, Villages of Rai, Limbu, Tamang, Chhetiri and Sherpa and tropical forests along the Arun and Barun River valley to Makalu Base Camp. Shipton La at 4216m high pass connects Arun and Barun valley that is of the beaten path trekking route in Nepal Himalaya.
Makalu Barun National Park was established in 1992 and the park has 431 species of birds, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Beer, Musk Deer, Red Panda, Wild Yak, Himalayan Goat and Wild Boar etc. It is recognized for its tremendous diversity of plants such as Rhododendron 25 species, 47 types of Orchids and 56 rare or endangered plants.
When is the best time for Makalu Trekking?
October/November and Apri/May is the best time for Makalu Base Camp trek. Winter snow generally covers Shipton La 4216m and become slippery in December to March. Monsoon starts early June in Eastern Nepal, and its end middle of September. Spring season (April/May) is the best time to see colorful Rhododendrons during Makalu trekking.
How to get Makalu Base Camp?
It is easy and the best way catch flight to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu to get trail head of Makalu Base Camp trek. It is connected by Road but long way drive from Kathmandu.
