The fifth highest peak in the world at 8463 meters of Mt. Makalu is located in Middle Eastern Himalaya of Nepal. When you come to do trek on Makalu Base Camp, there aren’t just high peaks you could see. You cross rice fields, Villages of Rai, Limbu, Tamang, Chhetiri and Sherpa and tropical forests along the Arun and Barun River valley to Makalu Base Camp. Shipton La at 4216m high pass connects Arun and Barun valley that is of the beaten path trekking route in Nepal Himalaya.

Makalu Barun National Park was established in 1992 and the park has 431 species of birds, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Beer, Musk Deer, Red Panda, Wild Yak, Himalayan Goat and Wild Boar etc. It is recognized for its tremendous diversity of plants such as Rhododendron 25 species, 47 types of Orchids and 56 rare or endangered plants.

When is the best time for Makalu Trekking?

October/November and Apri/May is the best time for Makalu Base Camp trek. Winter snow generally covers Shipton La 4216m and become slippery in December to March. Monsoon starts early June in Eastern Nepal, and its end middle of September. Spring season (April/May) is the best time to see colorful Rhododendrons during Makalu trekking.

How to get Makalu Base Camp?

It is easy and the best way catch flight to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu to get trail head of Makalu Base Camp trek. It is connected by Road but long way drive from Kathmandu.

Itinerary of Makalu Base Camp Trek:
Day 1: International Airport pick up.
Day 2: Trek briefing, preparation and visit Baudhanath Stupa in the afternoon.
Day 3: Kathmandu to Tumlingtar flight in the morning and drive to Num 1490m/4hrs.
Day 4: Trek to Seduwa 1540m/5hrs.
Day 5: To Tashigaon 2135m/5hrs
Day 6: To Kungma 3556m/5-6hrs.
Day 7: Acclimatizing day (view of Chamling peak).
Day 8: To Dobato 3800m/5-6hrs via Shipton La4217m high pass.
Day 9: To Yangle Kharka 3600m/4-5hrs.
Day 10: To Langmale 4407m/3-4hrs.
Day 11: To Shershop 4572m/2-3hrs (It has Sunrise and Sunset views on Makalu from Shershop)
Day 12: To Makalu Base Camp 4812m/2-3hrs.
Day 13: A day hike to Hilary Base Camp 4950m (good view of Mt. Makalu 8463m).
Day 14: Decent to Yangle Kharka 3598m/6-7hrs.
Day 15: To Dobato 3800m/6-7hrs.
Day 16: To Tashigaon 2135m via Shipton La pass 7-8hrs.
Day 17: To Num 1490m/6-7hrs.
Day 18: Drive to Tumlingtar 440m/4hrs.
Day 19: Flight to Kathmandu.
Note: Trek itinerary can be changed for interested side trips and extra days for acclimatization if needed.

1) Airport pick up and departure.
2) Two nights accommodation (Standard double or twin bed room with breakfast) at 2* Hotel at Thamel (Tourist center)/Kathmandu. Note:- The accommodation in Kathmandu can arrange/book according to client choice Hotel type. The clients have to pay differences if needed.
3) Makalu Barun Natioinal Park trekking entry fees.
4) Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card.
5) Kathmandu to Tumlingtar to Kathmandu by flight.
6) Tumlingtar to Num to Tumlingtar by Jeep (4WD).
7) Teahouse meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner with tea or coffee during the trekking days.
8) Nepali Staffs: An experience trek guide and necessary porter.
9) Three times meals and daily salary for guide and porter.
10) Insurance of guide and porter.
Cost does not include :
1) Lunch and dinner in Kathmandu.
2) Personal trekking equipment of clients.
3) Snack, Juice, Coca, Fanta, Sprite, Beer, Whisky, Boil and Mineral water during the trekking days.
4) Personal Insurance of clients such as medical, emergency evacuation (helicopter rescue USD10000-12000), flight and trek cancellation etc.
5) Expenses for personal nature: Hot showers, laundry, donations, museum entry fee, movie/film watching, postage, telephone calls and email/Internet etc.
6) Tips for guide and porter.
7) Sightseeing in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan etc. (City tour guide and transportation can arrange on request of clients).

Equipments for Makalu Base Camp trek:
We (organizer) supply Northface Tents with sleeping pad, kitchen equipments, food and fuel from Kathmandu.
Trekking boot, sleeping bag and some other good trekking stuffs require for Makalu trek. We will be sent a detailed equipment list upon trip booking.
Note: We have sleeping bag and down jacket renting facilities without fixed deposit for our clients.
