The Gokyo Lake Trek begins with a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu and a hike up to Namche Bazaar. We do a side trip to Everest View Hotel, Khumjung, and Khunde villages, where we can see the rich culture of Sherpas. Then, we head up to Mong La, Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo Lakes on the less crowded trail compared to Everest Base Camp. The Musk Deer, Himalayan Thar (mountain wild goats), and Pheasant (Nepali national bird can be seen en route to the Gokyo Valley trek. We cross the less trodden Renjo La (5360m) from Gokyo to reach Thame Village and Namche Bazaar through Bote Kosi Valley. The Renjo La has spectacular views of Everest, Gokyo Lake, and Nangpa La (5700m) – an ancient trade route to Tibet from the Everest region. We return to Lukla from Namche Bazaar.

Gokyo Lakes:

Gokyo Lakes is located at an elevation of 4700m to 5000m in the Everest region. It is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. Gokyo Lake (3rd Lake – Dudh Pokhari) is the main attraction in this region, covering an area of 42.9 ha (106 acres), sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The pilgrims visit the Lake during the Janai Purnima festival full moon in August. There are six Lakes in the valley, north along the Nagozumba glacier to Mt. Cho Oyu Base Camp. There are teahouses at Gokyo Lakeside (third Lake). There are splendid views of Mt. Cho Oyu and Gyachungkang from 4th Lake (Thonak Tsho). A viewpoint on the top of some moraines right above the Gokyo Fifth Lake (Nagozumba Tsho) gives splendid views of the giant mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu. Our guide leads you to the fifth or sixth Lakes (Gyazumba Tsho) to the end of Gokyo Valley or the base of Mt. Cho Oyu (8201m).
