The Panch Pokhari Lake Trek is situated in the 9th highest altitude wetland in the world, located in Langtang National Park and at the base of Mt. Jugal Himal, in Sindupalchowk District, Northeast of Kathmandu. There are five separate Lakes on one ground, including Surya, Bhairab, Naag, Sarasowoti, and Ganesh Kunda, which are sacred and considered the source of the Indrawati River. The Janai Purnima festival celebrates the full moon in August every year when Hindus come here for the ritual of changing the sacred thread (Janai) – a thread worn around their bodies. The shamans also come here to perform the ritual dance while playing the drum for their graduation.

The ecology is fascinating because it is pretty diverse here. We also walk through Tamang and Sherpa villages as part of a cultural trek. So, this trekking route is culturally, religiously, and ecologically interesting.

Panch Pokhari Lake Trek offers the opportunity to see the chain of high hills and the Jugal Himal range, including Mt. Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal, and Phurbuchyachu Himal. This trekking route suits both first-time trekkers and seasoned veterans who prefer unspoiled culture, natural beauty, and uncrowded trails in Nepal.

The Tilman La Pass Trek route connects the Panch Pokhari Ridge and the Langtang Valley Trekking Route. It is a wild and adventurous snow-ice mountain pass located between Mt. Gangchhempo and Dorje Lakpa. The Tilman La (5320m) crossing is best attempted from October to November and April to June. The fixed line and microspikes are handy for the snow-ice sections. Major Harold William Tilman was a British mountaineer and explorer who spent four months exploring the Himalayas, including the Jugal Himal, Langtang, and Ganesh Himal areas, in 1949. So, the mountain pass’s name was kept under his family name, Tilman.

We organised a camping and trekking trip to the remote and unfrequented Tilman La Pass Trek. We supply food, fuel, kitchen equipment, and tents by carrying porters. Our cook (chef) prepares fresh meals in Western, Nepali, Indian, and Tibetan daily. Our experienced guide will provide safety and security services while on the trek.

Day to day itinerary:

Our representative will help you transfer from the International Airport to the Hotel. Then, we will give you a full brief about the Panch Pokhari Trek.

Includes: Breakfast and accommodation in Kathmandu.
We will brief you about daily trek schedules and obtain Langtang National Park hiking passes. In the afternoon, we take you on a tour of the world heritage site Sawayambunath (monkey temple).

Meals includes: bed and breakfast at the Hotel.
We will catch the bus in the morning and travel to Chautara, which takes about four hours. After lunch in Chautara, we walked along a rough green valley road to Syaule. From here, we start a camping service. The cook (chef) prepares meals, and we sleep in a tented camp.

Leaving Syaule, we will walk gently uphill through Sano Okhareni to reach Phurse, where we had a lunch break. From here, we ascend through the forest path and sometimes pass the small settlements to reach Kami Kharka. We could see musk deer, Langurs (white monkeys), and birds en-route.

We will walk on the flat trail for a few hours and then entered the dense, lush forest of Rhododendrons, Pines, Oaks, and Junipers before reaching Pauwa Bas. En route, we could see some wild animals and cattle shelters.

From here, we will walk steeply uphill through the forest to reach the viewpoint at elevation 3832m, which is also the boundary of the Langtang National Park. When we walked downhill to Hile Banjyang, we had fantastic views of mountain vistas.

We will walk up and downhill through Rhododendron forest to reach Nasimpati. From here, we see fantastic sunset views over the Jugal Himal range.

After breakfast at sunrise, we will start an uphill walk through rocky hills to reach Panch Pokhari. Panch means five, and Pokhari means ponds. Five ponds are in one area, a sacred site for Hindus and Buddhists. They celebrate the Janai Purnima festival on every full moon in August and visit hundreds of thousands of pilgrims yearly. The Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and a few pilgrims' shelters are located there. After lunch, we toured the Panch Pokhari (five pounds).

In the morning, we pass through the Panch Pokhari Ridge above the treeline. The views of the Jugal Himal Range are superb from here. We go toward the North. Then, we descend into a valley before we make a final climb to Tin Pokhari.

Today, we climb to viewpoints (Kyanjin or Tsergo Ri) on the Langtang’s upper part to enjoy the dramatic landscapes. Due to elevation, it is easier to climb Kyanjin Ri (4773m) than Tsergo Ri (4984m). After spending half an hour at the top of the viewpoint, we head back down to Kyanjin Gomba, where we spend a second night.

We start retracing our footsteps by following the Langtang Khola and passing through Langtang village to reach the Lama Hotel. The trail downhill to Lama Hotel is faster than the ascent.

We take the high route from Rimche to the villages of Sherpagoan and Khangjim. These villages have spectacular views of Ganesh Himal, and we can see the Himalayan Thar (mountain goats) en route. From Khangjim, we retrace our footsteps to Syafrubesi.

We drive back to Kathmandu from Syafrubesi, bypassing the countryside and Trishuli bazaar.

Please read carefully cost includes and does not include the above. All the meals are included with tea/coffee while on the trek. We do include drinking water (boil/hot water). You can also take water purifying tablets or Seripen. Wi-Fi, battery charge, and hot showers are not included.

We do insure for trekking staff and provide warm enough equipment. We do our best for your safety. Although we suggest you buy comprehensive travel insurance that can cover flight cancellation, medical treatment, and Helicopter rescue emergency evacuation. Please buy the policy that can cover trekking activity up to 5000m for the days you will actually be trekking.

    • Comfortable hiking boot. Three pairs of socks. Sandals.
    • A down jacket, fleece jacket, three T-shirts, two trekking trousers, two drip-dry T-shirts, one long underwear, a woolen/fleece hat, glove, water/windproof jacket and trouser, Sunglass, lip balm, Sun screem (50+), Sun hat, a light scarf, soap/shampoo and trekking towel etc.
    • Sleeping bag (-20 degree centigrade) with hood.
    • Water purifier tablets, 2L water bottle, hiking poles, medical kit and tourch light with spare batteries etc.

    • A rucksack or duffel bag (70 to 75L) size.

    Note: We have down jacket and sleeping bag rental facilities for our clients. The rental fee is USD1 per sleeping bag and down jacket per day.
