Dolpo Region

Dolpo Region:

The Dolpo region feels far away from the modern world. It became famous from the movie “Himalaya” and the book “The Snow Leopard.” The main sight is Shey Phoksundo Lake. The water is deep turquoise. It sits against huge rock walls. You will not forget this view. Dolpo is one of Nepal’s best hidden places. It sits behind the big Dhaulagiri Mountain. The air is dry because rain clouds cannot reach it, and the land looks like a high desert. You will find deep canyons, old stone villages, and bright blue water.

High Camp Trekking is your local guide for this area. We handle all permits and plans. Our team knows the trails well. You just walk and enjoy the views.

The people here follow old traditions. Many practice Tibetan Buddhism. Some follow the ancient Bon religion. You will see old monasteries on the hills. You will meet local people wearing traditional clothes. Their way of life has not changed for many years. Dolpo is a restricted area. This means few tourists come here. You can walk all day without seeing other groups. You feel like a real explorer.

The region also has wild animals. It is part of Shey Phoksundo National Park. You might see blue sheep on the cliffs. If you are very lucky, you could spot a snow leopard. Eagles and vultures fly high above.

Trek options in the Dolpo Region:

At High Camp Trekking, we offer two main trails. One is shorter. One is for very experienced trekkers.

For the Phoksundo Lake Trek, you can go in summer. June to September is good. The monsoon rain does not reach this area. The trails are green and open. For the Upper Dolpo Trek, the best times are late spring and autumn. May is a good month. September to November is also perfect. The skies are clear. The views are the best.

Trekking in the Dolpo region is hard work. You walk at a high altitude. You go over 5,000 meters on some treks. The trails are rough and remote. You should have good fitness. For Upper Dolpo, you need some high-altitude experience. Dolpo is a restricted region. You need a special permit to enter. High Camp Trekking will get this for you. You also need a permit from Shey Phoksundo National Park. We include these in our planning.

Talk to High Camp Trekking today. We will help you plan your trip. Let us take you to the real Himalayas.
