The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is the most scenic journey in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal. Mount Kanchenjunga is the third-highest peak in the world at 8,586 meters. It is situated on the border between Nepal, India, and Tibet. The Kanchenjunga range has the massif’s five highest peaks.  It was first climbed on May 25th, 1955, by a British expedition group.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is gaining popularity nowadays. The basic rooms are available at the teahouse from March to May and September to December. We see the panoramic view of Kanchenjunga, Yalung Khang, Nepal Peak, and Jannu Himal. This trek offers high-alpine vegetation and a variety of Rhododendrons, Fir, Pine, Hemlock, and Oak trees in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.  The Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Blue Sheep, Wild Goat, Marmot, and Weasel can be seen en route.

We hike for a day to Jannu Himal Viewpoint from Khambachhen, a must-do in the Kanchenjunga region. It offers unforgettable scenery up close.

During the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, we go through the Rai and Limbu ethnic villages. The Rai and Limbu ethnic groups are more known as the mainstays of the British Gorkha Regiments. We spent two nights in Ghunsa (Botia) village to ensure safe acclimatization. After, we go toward Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pangpengma, 5,160 meters).

After the North Base Camp, we return to Ghunsa village and head south of Kanchenjunga through the Sininon (Selele) La. There are spectacular views of Jannu Himal, Nepal Peak, Kanchenjunga I (8,586 meters), and its glacier from the Selele La. After Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, we walk up and down a more adventurous, narrow trekking path to Khebang. From Khebang, we travel to Bhadrapur by jeep or bus. At the end of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, we fly from Bhadrapur Airport to Kathmandu.

This trek requires special hiking permits from the Nepal Immigration (Trekking Department). A minimum of two International trekkers are required to obtain a hiking permit in Kathmandu.
