The Panch Pokhari Trek takes you to the world’s ninth-highest wetland in Langtang National Park, at the foot of the Jugal Himal in Sindupalchowk District, northeast of Kathmandu. The five sacred lakes—Surya Kunda, Bhairab Kunda, Naag Kunda, Sarasowoti Kunda, and Ganesh Kunda—sit together and are believed to be the source of the Indrawati River. Every August, during the Janai Purnima festival, Hindus visit to change the sacred thread (Janai) they wear. Shamans also gather to perform ritual dances and play drums as part of their graduation ceremony.
The region’s diverse ecology is remarkable. Walking through Tamang and Sherpa villages, we experience a route rich in culture, religious heritage, and natural beauty.
Panch Pokhari Trek offers the opportunity to see the chain of high hills and the Jugal Himal range, including Mt. Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal, and Phurbuchyachu Himal. This trekking route suits both first-time trekkers and seasoned veterans who prefer unspoiled culture, natural beauty, and uncrowded trails in Nepal.
The Tilman La Pass Trek connects the Panch Pokhari Ridge with the Langtang Valley Trekking Route. This challenging snow-and-ice pass lies between Mt. Gangchhempo and Dorje Lakpa. The best times to cross Tilman La (5320 meters) are from October to November and from April to June. Using a fixed line and microspikes helps on snowy and icy sections. The pass is named after Major Harold William Tilman, a British mountaineer and explorer who spent four months in 1949 exploring the Himalayas. His explorations included the Jugal Himal, Langtang, and Ganesh Himal regions.
