The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek offers scenic views in Nepal’s eastern Himalayas. This challenging trek lasts 24 days and covers about 220 kilometres, making it longer than many Himalayan treks. Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak at 8,586 meters, lies on the border of Nepal, India, and Tibet. It includes five peaks, which are among the massif’s highest. A British group made the first successful ascent on May 25, 1955.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is growing in popularity. It involves long daily walks and steep ascents with good physical fitness. The highest sleeping altitude on the route is around 5,160 meters at Pangpengma, which can pose a risk of altitude sickness. Basic teahouse accommodations are available in the March-to-May and September-to-December seasons. You might spot wildlife like the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Blue Sheep, Wild Goat, Marmot, and Weasel along the way.

A day hike from Khambachhen to the Jannu Himal Viewpoint is awesome in the Kanchenjunga region. Start in Khambachhen at approximately 4,150 meters and climb to 4,700 meters at the viewpoint. Plan for a 5-hour round trip and moderate difficulty compared with the longer Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. Carry warm layers, water, snacks, sun protection, and a basic first aid kit. Hire a licensed guide for direction and safety, especially where the trail is unclear.

The trek passes through Rai and Limbu villages. Experience local culture by tasting traditional foods such as millet bread and fermented bamboo shoots, observing customary dances and rituals, and staying in welcoming homestays. These occasions offer a unique insight into daily village life. Stay two nights in Ghunsa Village to acclimatise before continuing to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pangpengma, 5,160 meters).

After visiting the North Base Camp, the trek returns to Ghunsa village, then continues south of Kanchenjunga via the Sininon (Selele) La. It offers spectacular views of Mount Jannu Himal, Nepal Peak, Kanchenjunga I (8,586 meters), and its glacier. After Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, continue on a narrower, more challenging path to Khebang. Then take a shared jeep from Khebang to Bhadrapur, about 10 hours depending on road conditions. The guide books morning jeep seats in advance, since there may not be many available. From Bhadrapur Airport, daily flights to Kathmandu take approximately 1 hour.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek requires special hiking permits from the Nepal Immigration’s Trekking Department. Arrange documents early in Kathmandu to submit applications and collect permits before departure.
