The Rolwaling Valley Trek takes you through a remote area in eastern Nepal, below Mount Gaurishankar. Sherpas know this mountain as Jomo Tersingma. Rising to 7,145 meters near the southern border with Tibet. It has two peaks: the northern peak, Shankar, represents Lord Shiva, while the southern peak, Gauri, symbolises Parvati, Shiva’s consort.
The Rolwaling Valley trek offers a chance to see the sacred Himalayan landscape and discover the cultures of the Brahman, Chhetri, Gurung, Tamang, and Sherpa peoples. We walk through the Rolwaling valleys, pass the farmlands of Bhote Kosi and Sun Kosi, explore alpine valleys, and visit the glacial lakes in the upper Rolwaling region.
Tsho-Rolpo Lake is a glacial lake in the Rolwaling Valley at 4,850 meters above sea level. As one of the largest glacial lakes in Nepal, it stretches 3.45 kilometres in length and 0.5 kilometres in width, with an average depth of about 55 metres. Its size makes it a major landmark in the valley.
The Rolwaling Valley Trek begins with a scenic drive along the Araniko Highway to Barabise, an old trading town bordering Tibet. The trail then passes through dense forests and broad ridges. It is offering views of peaks such as Chekigo (6,257 meters) and Kang Nachugo (6,737 meters). It provides a memorable look at one of Nepal’s most remote and beautiful regions.
We cross suspension bridges, pass through deep gorges, and hike along steep trails. Along the way, locals share fascinating stories about the Yeti, and the valley is rich in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. We also visit the Bigu and Simi Gompas. Since the trek lies in the Gaurishankar Conservation Area, we may also spot some wildlife.
The Rolwaling region is well known for rock and ice climbing and mountaineering, drawing visitors from around the world. Tsho-Rolpo Lake is especially popular with Nepali tourists. Situated between the Everest and Langtang regions, Rolwaling lets trekkers and climbers reach the Everest region or Langtang via the Great Himalayan Trails, making the regional links clearer.
