The Langtang Valley Trek is in Langtang National Park, north of Kathmandu near the Tibet border. It is one of Nepal’s easier-to-reach treks, and it is moderate to challenging. Most days involve 5 to 7 hours of trekking, with daily elevation gains of 600 to 1,000 meters. The Tsergo Ri, at about 4,984 meters, is the highest point of the trek. The best time to go is from September to June, when the weather is clear and the views are at their best.
On the trail, you’ll pass through a beautiful valley, see the Glacier River and rhododendron forests. It is the home of yaks, red pandas, langurs (grey monkeys), Himalayan thars (mountain goats), snow leopards, and wild dogs.
Mount Langtang Lirung (7,234 meters) is the park’s highest peak and dominates the valley. Other notable peaks include Gangchhempo, Dorje Lakpa, Langsisa Ri, Yubra Himal, Naya Khang, and Yala Peak. The sunset over Mount Gangchhempo is not to be missed!
The Langtang Valley Trek starts in Syabrubesi, which is about a day’s drive from Kathmandu, and goes through Langtang village on the way to Kyanjin Gompa. After the April 2015 earthquake, avalanches from Langtang Lirung destroyed much of Langtang Village. The area has been rebuilt and now offers places to stay. Along the route, you’ll find comfortable lodges in every village. The family-run lodges usually have basic but clean rooms, shared dining areas, and home-cooked meals. Many lodges also offer hot showers and Wi-Fi for a small fee. This gives trekkers a warm and friendly place to rest each day.
In Kyanjin Village, which sits at an altitude of about 3,870 meters, you can visit the Buddhist monastery and the Yak cheese factory. The Yak cheese factory started as a Swiss project in 1955.
Most trekkers spend two nights in Kyanjin to help the body adjust to the altitude before attempting higher points like Tsergo Ri (4984 meters). Taking this extra time reduces the risk of acute mountain sickness and makes for a safer, more enjoyable trek. You can also take optional day hikes, such as to Langsisa Kharka on the Ganja La side or a shorter walk to a nearby glacier lake. The Til Man and Ganja La passes link Langtang and Helambu, but both are tough routes.
The Langtang Valley trek, including ascents to Kyanjin and Tsergo Ri, typically takes 8 to 10 days, depending on your pace and chosen route. Hiring a local guide and porter increases safety, provides cultural insight, and offers support with navigation, communication, and emergencies. Porter assistance also increases comfort by carrying heavier bags, allowing trekkers to enjoy the experience better.
