The Rolwaling Valley Trek is located in the isolated zone on the east-west side, just below Mt. Gaurishankar (7145 m), towards the southern Tibetan border. Mt. Gaurishankar is known as Jomo Tersingma by Sherpas. It has two summits: the northern (higher) summit, called Shankar (a manifestation of Lord Shiva), and the southern summit, called Gauri (a manifestation of Shiva’s consort, Parvati).
The Rolwaling Valley trek lets us witness the sacred Himalayan landscape and learn more about the Brahman, Chhetri, Gurung, Tamang, and Sherpa cultures. While trekking through the valleys of Rolwaling, we pass the beautiful farmland of Bhote Kosi and Sun Kosi valleys, the alpine valley, and the glacial lakes of the upper Rolwaling region.
The snow-fed glacial lake of Tsho-Rolpo Lake offers a unique experience in the pristine Rolwaling Valley. At an elevation of 4850 m, it is one of the biggest glacier lakes in Nepal. The lake has a maximum length of 3.45 kilometres, a width of 0.5 kilometres, and an average depth of 55 meters.
The Rolwaling Valley Trek begins with a scenic drive along the Kathmandu–Lhasa highway to the ancient trading town of Barabise. We trek through dense, gloomy, primitive forests and broad ridges, with beautiful views of surrounding mountain peaks, including Chekigo (6,257 meters), Kang Nachugo (6,737 meters), Chuyima Go (6,258 meters), Ramdung Peak (5,930 meters), and Parchemuche (6,273 meters). The Rolwaling trek leads through one of Nepal’s most remote, beautiful, and unexplored regions.
We adventure over dizzy suspension bridges, impressive gorges, and steep paths. Locals tell romantic stories about the Yeti. This valley is enriched with both Hindu and Buddhist Mythology. En route, we visit Bigu and Simi Gombas (monasteries). We can see wildlife because the trek is in the Gaurishankar Conservation Area.
The Rolwaling region is also renowned for rock and ice climbing, as well as mountaineering, attracting international tourists. Tsho-Rolpo Lake is a major attraction for domestic tourists in Nepal. Rolwaling is located between the Everest and Langtang regions. Trekkers or mountaineers can reach Everest or Langtang by following the Great Himalayan Trails, including the Rolwaling region.
