The Gokyo Lake Trek passes through Sagarmatha National Park in the Everest region, offering dramatic mountain views throughout the route. It typically takes 12 to 14 days and leads from the turquoise Gokyo Lakes to Gokyo Ri (5,357 meters). Then to the Ngozumpa Glacier, where sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. The best trekking periods are March to May and October to December, when clear skies make the scenery especially vivid.

First, obtain a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit (currently NPR 3,000 per foreigner) at the Lukla entry point. Next, obtain a Trek Card (currently NPR 3,000 per individual). Gather all required documents and follow these steps to simplify the procedure and ensure a smooth start to the trek.

As a scenic alternative to Everest Base Camp, the ascent of Gokyo Ri offers a less crowded route. It is with dramatic scenery along the way, plus sweeping views of all rising above 8,000 meters.

The Gokyo Lake trek begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, offering sweeping Himalayan views. From Lukla, it continues to Namche Bazaar, then to the Gokyo Valley. From Gokyo Lake, the route crosses Renjo La (5,360 meters) to Thame Village. Then continues through the Bote Kosi Valley and back to Lukla. Renjo La (mountain pass) offers spectacular views of Mount Everest, the lakes, and dramatic Himalayan scenery throughout the crossing.

The Gokyo Lake Trek schedule includes two key acclimatization days. First in Namche Bazaar and then in Gokyo, helping your body adjust and giving you time to rest at altitude. It also gives you time to enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery that stands out along the route. Trekkers can add extra rest or acclimatization days if needed.

The Gokyo Lake Trek is moderately challenging and requires good physical fitness for its high-altitude days, especially at Renjo La. Prior hiking experience at altitude is recommended. Begin training 2 to 3 months before your trek with a regular fitness routine that includes aerobic exercise, strength training, and endurance training for your legs and core. Aim for 4 to 5 workouts per week, steadily increasing intensity and duration. Practice hiking with a loaded backpack and, if possible, at higher elevations. This preparation will help you feel ready for the route’s high-altitude days and steep sections when they occur, so your training matches the route’s sequence and demands.

Packing appropriate gear is essential for comfort and safety in changing mountain conditions. Key items include layered clothing, a warm down jacket, a hat, gloves, sturdy waterproof hiking boots, a sleeping bag rated for below-zero temperatures, a headlamp with extra batteries, sun protection, and a refillable water bottle. Trekking poles, lightweight rain gear, and a basic first aid kit are also recommended.

Hiring a licensed guide or porter is not mandatory but is highly recommended for most trekkers. Guides offer navigation, local knowledge, cultural knowledge, and assistance with permits, accommodations, and emergencies. Porters can carry your backpack, lessening physical strain and increasing comfort. Many travelers hire both a guide and a porter for added safety and support, especially at high altitude or on a first trek in Nepal. Guides and porters are available for hire in Kathmandu, and employing local staff supports the community.

The Gokyo Lakes, located at elevations between 4,700 and 5,000 meters in the Gokyo Valley, are among the world’s highest freshwater lakes. Goo Lake (Dudh Pokhari, the third lake) is the main attraction, spanning 42.9 hectares and revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Pilgrims visit during the Janai Purnima festival, held on the August full moon, which features rituals, offerings, and colorful local gatherings. Trekkers visiting at this time can observe or participate in these cultural celebrations, gaining insight into the lakes’ spiritual significance. The six lakes extend from south to north along the Ngozumpa Glacier toward Mount Cho Oyu Base Camp, forming a striking turquoise chain beneath towering peaks and dramatic alpine scenery.

Beginning at the fourth lake (Thonak Tsho), the route continues past Mount Cho Oyu and Gyachungkang. From a viewpoint atop moraines above the fifth lake (Nagozumba Tsho), views open to Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu. The route then reaches the sixth lake (Gyazumba Tsho), completing the sequence at the base of Cho Oyu (8,201 meters).
